The tale is narrated in part by Sister Clare, a childhood friend of Marie-Adélaïde, who after losing the young man she loves to war and then the Princess to disease, becomes a nun. For Clare it is her devoted mission to tell the story of Marie-Adélaïde, mother of the child who will become Louis XV.

Carmel Bird is an Australian novelist whose books have been short-listed three times for the Miles Franklin Award. In 2016 she received the Patrick White Literary Award. Crimson Velvet Heart is her eleventh novel, being her first venture into the historical genre. Her short fiction and essays have been widely published, and she is a popular teacher of creative writing.
