We’re hiring a Casual Social Media Manager!

✨ Are you a digital storyteller with a passion for historical fiction? ✨

The Historical Novel Society Australasia (HNSA) is looking for a Casual Social Media Manager to be our new digital voice! If you love historical novels and know exactly what makes the #Bookstagram and #BookTok communities tick, we want you on our team.

Position Description: Casual Social Media Manager

About the Historical Novel Society Australasia (HNSA) The Historical Novel Society Australasia (HNSA) is the premier literary organisation dedicated to celebrating, promoting, and supporting the historical fiction genre across Australia and New Zealand. Our community is built on a shared love of history, research, and captivating storytelling. We are currently seeking a creative, highly motivated, and organised Social Media Manager to join our dynamic team on a casual basis.

The Role Are you a digital storyteller with a deep-seated passion for historical fiction? We are looking for a Casual Social Media Manager who can help us celebrate historical novels, authors and publishing - and grow the genre for a modern audience. In this role, you will be the digital voice for the HNSA, responsible for cultivating a vibrant, engaged community of readers, authors, and history enthusiasts. Because the literary landscape is increasingly visual, a strong emphasis will be placed on your ability to produce dynamic, high-quality video content that captures the imagination and broadens our reach across key platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin, with the potential to add a TikTok channel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Social Media Management: Plan, develop, and execute a comprehensive social media content calendar. You will be responsible for driving high-impact digital campaigns for our flagship events, notably the prestigious ARA Historical Novel Prize and our vibrant History Unbound Festival. Alongside these major milestones, you will curate ongoing, evergreen content designed to nurture our current followers, spark literary conversations, and actively grow our audience base.

  • Video Content Creation & Direction: Take the lead in devising, filming, and editing compelling video assets. You will act as both director and creator, coordinating with various subjects including HNSA committee members, celebrated authors, local independent bookshops, and literary events. From trending short-form Reels to longer interview formats, you will craft visual narratives that resonate with book lovers.

  • Community Management & Engagement: Actively monitor and manage HNSA's social media channels by responding to comments, direct messages, and mentions in a timely and on-brand manner. You will foster a welcoming digital environment by encouraging discussions, answering enquiries, and building relationships with our audience to ensure they feel valued and heard.

  • Brand-Aligned Graphic Design: Produce visually appealing and polished graphics that align with the established HNSA brand guidelines. Whether creating promotional tiles for upcoming events, award announcements, or fun engagement graphics, you will ensure our visual identity remains consistent, accessible, and highly professional across all digital touchpoints.

Time Commitment & Compensation This is a casual, hourly-paid position currently requiring approximately 3 to 5 hours of work per week, with the potential for hours to grow over time as the community and digital footprint expand. Please note that the role demands flexibility, as you will be required to take on additional hours and increased capacity during our peak seasonal events—specifically around the ARA Historical Novel Prize and the History Unbound Festival.

What You Bring

  • A genuine, demonstrated passion for historical fiction and the broader publishing landscape.

  • Proven experience in social media management, audience engagement, and digital community building.

  • Strong technical skills in end-to-end video content creation, including filming, audio capture, and editing.

  • Proficiency in graphic design tools (such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite) with a keen eye for branding and aesthetics.

  • Excellent written communication skills with a knack for crafting engaging, error-free captions and copy.

How to Apply If you are ready to help us write the next chapter in HNSA’s digital history, we would love to hear from you. Please submit your resume, a brief cover letter sharing your favourite historical fiction novels, and a portfolio or links showcasing your recent video and graphic content to contact@hnsa.org.au
