HNSA SHORT STORY CONTEST
The inaugural HNSA Short Story Contest is open to all delegates of the Melbourne Historical Novel Society Australasia Conference (HNSA 2017). The HNSA committee is delighted to announce that Sandra Gulland, author of The Shadow Queen and Mistress of the Sun will act as our judge. Our thanks go to Eagle Books and the Historical Novel Society for sponsoring the prizes.
Prizes
The winner will be awarded:
- A prize of $500
- A free membership of the Historical Novel Society https://historicalnovelsociety.org/
- A certificate
The second and third placed entrants will each receive certificates.
With the author’s consent, the winning, second place and third place stories will be published by Backstory (both online and print on demand) after the conference. http://www.backstoryjournal.com.au
The short list and prize-winning entry will be announced at the HNSA 2017 Conference Dinner.
Opening date: 19 February 2017
Closing date for receipt of entries: Midnight 31 July 2017 AEST
Word count: 3,000 maximum, 1,500 minimum
Format and Period: Historical short stories set no later than 1965
Theme: Open
Cost: $10. This is non-refundable.
All entries must be submitted with a cover sheet containing the following:
- Entrant’s name
- Title of story
- Email address
- Phone number
- Booking IDs for your HNSA 2017 conference ticket and contest entry
- The statement ‘I agree to the conditions of entry set out in the HNSA Short Story Contest Rules.’

Purchase of an HNSA 2017 weekend conference or day ticket is a precondition to entering the HNSA Short Story Contest.
