The HNSA Committee is excited to announce the launch of our 2022 online program of workshops and chat salons.
Join us this winter for an exciting line-up of authors and industry professionals. It’s the perfect way to spend those chilly August days.
WORKSHOP WEEKEND: 6 & 7 AUGUST 2022
Our Workshop Weekend will run on Saturday and Sunday (6 & 7 August) with four 3 hour workshops featuring some of Australia’s most well-respected historical novellists.
In The Art & Carpentry of Fiction, Kathryn Heyman will lead emerging fiction writers through the crucial elements for structuring great fiction. By exploring the need for a bit of chaos in the writing process and giving you the tools to create structure and order, this workshop will send you back to your writing with a new vigour and a framework for your fiction.
Join Ella Carey, international bestselling author of eight multiple storyline historical fiction novels, to discover the myriad ways you can utilise the intriguing method of Parallel Narratives storytelling in your work.
In her Editing workshop, Elena Gomez will provide guidance on the principles of writing compelling historical fiction. Elena will cover key structural elements such as voice, narrative structure, tenses, character and setting, as well as how to build, slow or maintain pace in an effective story arc that weaves in historical fiction.
The thought of writing historical fiction can be daunting. Writers might have a great idea for a historical novel but find the necessary research and its interpretation into fiction a little overwhelming. In the Research & Fieldwork workshop, Mirandi Riwoe will discuss research methods and the writing processes involved in writing a historical novel.
Places are limited to 16 people per workshop, so book early to ensure your spot.
CHAT SALONS: EVERY FRIDAY IN AUGUST 2022
Last year, HNSA introduced chat salons where participants could connect with authors in a Zoom chat room to discuss history, books, and the writing craft. The salons were so popular we’re continuing the fun in 2022. The sessions are informal and designed for you to ‘get to know’ an author from the comfort of your own home. You can converse directly to them, communicate via the chat function, or simply ‘lurk and listen’. Whatever suits!
Our Chat Salons will run for an hour on Friday nights at 7.30pm throughout August, so it’s the ideal time to get cosy with your choice of tipple and join the discussion about your favourite time periods and topics with some of Australia’s best authors.
The 2022 Chat Salons include:
